Ask ChatGPT or Claude to plan a week in Portugal and you get a good draft in seconds. Ask it to book the hotel and it politely explains that it cannot. That gap, between advice and action, is what separates an AI chatbot from an AI travel agent.
An AI travel agent is an assistant that can act on your trips: create them, change them, search live hotel and tour prices, keep the places you saved, and hand the plan to the people traveling with you. It does that through tools the assistant is connected to. This guide covers what those tools can do right now, what they cannot, and how to connect one.
What an AI travel agent can do today
With Dreamfare connected, a ChatGPT or Claude conversation can:
- Make a real trip from a plan. "Plan 5 days in Tokyo for late April, food and temples, and save it to Dreamfare" ends with a trip you can open on your phone: five days, each stop a real place with a pin, a photo, opening hours and a booking link where there is one.
- Search stays and activities with live prices. "Find a hotel in Kyoto for May 10 to 12 under $200 a night" returns real inventory with taxes and fees included. Ask it to add the best one and it lands on the right day.
- Turn a video into places. Paste a TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook or Reddit link. The agent watches it, pulls out the places it names and the advice it gives, and offers to drop them into a trip.
- Edit anything. Move a dinner to Thursday, rename a stop, add sunscreen to the packing list, tick off the passport.
- Keep the trip social. Make an invite link so a friend can edit, post in the trip chat, read what the crew decided, count votes on a stop.
- Track bookings. Ask what is still unbooked and get the booking links. Paste a confirmation email and it files itself on the right stop.
- Start from someone else's trip. Browse itineraries other travelers published and copy one into your own plans.
- Compare flights. Search fares across the sources it can reach, filtered by price, stops, cabin, times, airline and bags, and attach the one you pick to the trip. Quotes stay indicative until you book on the partner's own site.
Every one of those is a shipped tool, not a promise. The full list is on the Dreamfare MCP page.
What it cannot do yet
Be suspicious of any AI travel agent that claims more than this.
- It does not pay. Every bookable stop carries a tracked booking link, flights included. You book on the partner's site, in your own name, with your own card. The agent can mark the stop as booked and file the confirmation, but the payment never happens in the chat, and a fare is only final on the partner's page.
- It does not know what you did not tell it. A connected agent sees the trips, saved places and tips on your Dreamfare account. It does not read your email or your camera roll.
Set one up in about a minute
Both assistants connect to the same server. Pick the one you use.
Claude (claude.ai, the desktop app, the mobile apps; every plan, the free one included):
- Open Claude settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector.
- Name it Dreamfare and paste
https://api.dreamfare.app/mcpas the URL. - Press Connect and sign in to your Dreamfare account. No account yet? Signing up takes a minute.
- In a chat, open the plus button, choose Connectors, and switch Dreamfare on.
ChatGPT:
- Open ChatGPT settings, then Plugins.
- Search for Dreamfare Travel Assistant and choose Connect.
- Sign in to your Dreamfare account when asked.
- In any chat, type
@Dreamfareor just ask to plan a trip.
The sign-in is OAuth: the assistant never sees your password, and you can disconnect it from the assistant's settings whenever you like. The longer walkthroughs are in How to plan a trip with Claude and How to plan a trip with ChatGPT.
A trip, end to end
Here is what a real session looks like, prompt by prompt.
- "Import this TikTok and tell me which places are worth a day trip." The agent watches the video, returns the places on a map with the creator's tips, and asks whether to save them.
- "Plan 3 days in Lisbon around those, late October, and save it." A trip appears: three days, the imported places placed sensibly, a pastelaria near the first morning's viewpoint, the last train noted.
- "Find a hotel near Alfama with free cancellation and compare the top three." A comparison table: price per night, rating, distance to the day-one stops. "Add the second one" puts it on the check-in day.
- "Make an invite link so my sister can edit, and post that dinner on Friday is booked." Link made, message posted. She opens it on her phone and moves Friday's dinner an hour later.
- "What is still unbooked?" Two tours and the Sintra train, each with its booking link.
None of that lives in the chat. The trip is on the map in the app, shared with your sister, with the booking links inside it.
Prompts that get better answers
- Say the dates and the month. Prices and opening hours depend on them.
- Name a budget for stays. "Under $200 a night" beats "not too expensive".
- Ask it to check your saved places first. Dreamfare's planner already does, and a connected agent can too: "Use what I saved for Lisbon before suggesting new places."
- Ask for one thing at a time when editing. "Move the castle to day 2 and swap dinner for something near it" is two edits; the agent handles both, but a mistake is easier to see one at a time.
- Ask it to read the trip back before you book. Stops get their pins, photos and booking links a few seconds after they are added.
What to look for in any AI travel agent
- Does the plan leave the chat? If the answer is a wall of text you have to retype, it is a chatbot.
- Are the places real? Look for pins, opening hours and photos, not names that sound right.
- Are the prices live? A hotel price without a date is a guess.
- Who owns the trip? It should be yours, editable without the assistant, and shareable with people who do not use the assistant at all.
- Can you take the keys back? Disconnecting should be one setting, and it should not delete your trips.
Dreamfare passes all five, and the AI trip planner inside the app plans from the same saved places and tips whether or not you ever connect an assistant.
