Know before you go 🧳

The practical stuff for Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. Check these before you book and pack.

Passport validity: Rule of thumb: many countries (including Mexico) expect your passport to be valid for the duration of stay; many destinations recommend 6+ months beyond your travel dates — verify for your passport.
Visa overview: Broad pattern: holders of many Western passports enter Mexico visa-free for tourism (often up to 180 days). Requirements vary by nationality — check the Mexican immigration site or IATA Travel Centre for your passport.
Tourist card (FMM): Most visitors must fill a migratory form (FMM) on arrival or online; keep it during your stay and return it on departure if issued on paper. Check official guidance before travel.

Vaccinations to check: Routine vaccines should be up to date. Check CDC/WHO and your doctor for recommended vaccines and any travel notices for Mexico before departure.
Mosquito-borne illnesses: Aedes mosquitoes (dengue, Zika) are present year-round. Use DEET/IR3535-based repellent, wear long sleeves at dawn/dusk, and consider mosquito netting for some accommodations.
Tap water: Tap water is generally not safe to drink across much of the peninsula. Use bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing teeth.
Travel insurance: Carry travel health insurance with medevac/evacuation and dental coverage; medical facilities vary in capability outside major cities.

Currency: Local currency: Mexican peso (MXN). ATMs are common in cities and tourist zones; notify your bank of travel to avoid blocks.
Card acceptance: Major cards widely accepted in Cancún/Mérida/Riviera Maya; smaller vendors, markets and remote areas are cash-only. Carry small bills for tips and taxis.
Tipping norms: Typical tips: restaurants 10–15% if service not included; bartenders/bellhops and drivers small cash tip. Tipping is customary but discretionary.

Plugs & voltage: Plugs: Type A/B (flat pins). Voltage: nominally 120–127 V, 60 Hz. Bring a travel adapter and check appliance compatibility.
SIM & roaming: Local prepaid SIMs (telcel, movistar, at&t Mexico) offer good coverage in cities and tourist corridors. Bring passport for purchase; compare data packages at airport stores.
Wi‑Fi: Wi‑Fi is common in hotels, cafés and restaurants in tourist areas but can be slow or unreliable in remote/archaeological sites.

Respect local culture: Yucatán has strong Mayan and colonial influences. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites and cenotes; ask for permission before photographing people, especially in indigenous communities.
Haggling & markets: Haggling is common in markets and for crafts; remain polite and expect to negotiate. For fixed-price retail and restaurants, pay the posted price.
Crime & vigilance: Tourist areas are generally safe but petty theft occurs. Use hotel safes, avoid flashing valuables, and prefer licensed taxis or app-based services where available.

Best months to visit: High season: December–April (drier, more comfortable). Rainy/warmer season: May–November with a higher hurricane risk June–November. Plan accordingly.
What to pack: Pack light breathable clothing, sun protection, a rain jacket for showers, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and sturdy shoes for ruins and cenotes.
Heat & humidity: Expect hot, humid conditions most of the year—stay hydrated, schedule outdoor activities early morning or late afternoon when possible.

Official language: Spanish is the primary language. Yucatec Maya is widely spoken in many communities; English is common in tourist zones.
Useful phrases: Hola (hello). ¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much?). ¿Dónde está el baño? (Where is the bathroom?). Gracias (thank you). Perdón/Disculpe (excuse me).
Politeness tip: Use buenos días/tardes/noches and a polite tone; simple Spanish greetings go a long way outside major resorts.

Cancún (CUN): Airport to hotel zone or Playa del Carmen: options include shared shuttles, private transfers, ADO bus to downtown/Playa del Carmen, and licensed taxis. Prebook transfers during high season.
Mérida (MID): Mérida center is reachable by taxi or authorized airport shuttles; ADO buses connect Mérida with other Yucatán cities. Arrange rides through official counters at arrivals.
Campeche (CPE) & remote sites: Smaller airports have limited public transit; expect taxis or prebooked transfers. For travel to archaeological sites, rent a car or book organized tours for convenience and safety.

General guidance, not legal advice. Entry and health rules depend on your passport and change often. Verify with official sources before you fly.
