Know before you go 🧳
The practical stuff for Tokyo, Japan. Check these before you book and pack.
Entry & documents
- Passport validity: Rule of thumb: many countries require 6+ months validity beyond travel; confirm Japan's current requirement for your passport before booking.
- Visas — check for you: Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Common pattern: many Western passports have short-term visa-free stays, but always verify your own passport on Japan’s immigration site or the IATA Travel Centre.
- Arrival procedures: Expect immigration, customs forms and health screening. Have return/onward ticket and accommodation address ready; electronic gates (e-gates) may require pre-registration for some nationals.
- Local emergency numbers: Police: 110. Fire & ambulance: 119. Keep these accessible and have your accommodation address in Japanese for responders or taxi drivers.
Health & safety
- Vaccinations: No universal special vaccine mandates; check routine and destination-specific recommendations with your healthcare provider and official health sites before travel.
- Travel insurance: Carry travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and inpatient care; Japan’s medical bills can be costly for visitors without coverage.
- Medications: If bringing prescription meds, carry originals and a doctor’s note in English; verify legality of controlled substances in Japan prior to travel.
- Tap water: Tap water in Japan is safe to drink in cities, so a refillable bottle is fine for daily use.
Money & payments
- Currency: Local currency code: JPY (yen). Japan is cash-oriented; carry some cash for small shops, temples and rural areas.
- Cards & ATMs: Major credit cards accepted in many places, but not everywhere. Use 7-Eleven, Post Office or international ATMs for reliable cash withdrawals.
- Tipping norm: Tipping is not customary and can cause confusion; exceptional service is best shown with a thank-you in Japanese or small gift gestures.
- Notify banks: Tell your bank/card issuer you’ll be in Japan to reduce fraud blocks and confirm international withdrawal fees and daily limits.
Connectivity & power
- Plug & voltage: Plugs: Type A (two flat pins). Voltage: 100 V, frequency 50/60 Hz depending on region. Bring a voltage converter only if your device isn't dual-voltage.
- SIM & eSIM: Short-term travelers commonly use prepaid SIMs or eSIMs; verify device compatibility and buy at airport counters, electronics stores or online before arrival.
- Pocket Wi‑Fi: Pocket Wi‑Fi rentals are popular for groups and provide reliable data across Tokyo; reserve in advance for airport pickup.
- Public Wi‑Fi: Free Wi‑Fi is available at many stations, hotels and cafes but can be spotty; use VPN for secure access to sensitive accounts.
Local etiquette
- Respectful behavior: Politeness, punctuality and quiet public behavior are valued. Avoid loud phone conversations on trains and follow local signage and queuing rules.
- Shoes & indoor rules: Many homes, ryokan and some temples require removing shoes; follow host instructions and use provided slippers where offered.
- Cash gestures: Do not tip. When paying, place cash or card on the tray provided at counters rather than handing it directly when prompted.
- Public transit etiquette: Keep to the left on escalators in Tokyo (region-dependent), give priority seats to those in need and avoid eating while commuting.
Climate & packing
- Best months: Best times: March–May (spring blossoms) and October–November (autumn colors). These offer mild weather and lower humidity.
- Hot & typhoon season: July–August are hot and humid; typhoon season can affect travel in August–September. Check forecasts and flight status during summer months.
- What to pack: Pack comfortable walking shoes, light layers, a compact umbrella, and a light jacket for evenings; include sun protection in summer and warm layers in winter.
- Winter: Winters are cool to cold; central Tokyo rarely has heavy snow, but temperatures can dip—bring a warm coat if traveling December–February.
Language & basics
- Official language: Japanese is the official language. English signage is common in central Tokyo but less so in neighborhoods and rural areas.
- Useful phrase: Hello: Hello: Konnichiwa (こんにちは) — polite daytime greeting.
- Useful phrase: Thank you: Thank you: Arigatou gozaimasu (ありがとうございます) — use for polite thanks.
- Useful phrase: Excuse me/where: Excuse me/Where is…: Sumimasen / …wa doko desu ka? (すみません / …はどこですか？) — handy for getting attention and directions.
Airports & getting around
- Main airports: Tokyo's primary airports: Narita (NRT) — farther from city center; Haneda (HND) — closest to central Tokyo and domestic network hub.
- Narita to center: Narita options: Narita Express, Keisei Skyliner, airport limousine buses and taxis. Choose by budget, luggage and final Tokyo station; reserve seats for peak times.
- Haneda to center: Haneda options: Tokyo Monorail or Keikyu Line to central Tokyo, airport limousine buses and taxis. Quick and frequent connections to major hubs.
- Local transit tips: Get a reloadable IC card (Suica/PASMO) for trains, buses and convenience stores. Plan routes with transit apps and avoid rush-hour if possible.
General guidance, not legal advice. Entry and health rules depend on your passport and change often. Verify with official sources before you fly.
