Know before you go 🧳
The practical stuff for Seville, Spain. Check these before you book and pack.
Entry & documents
- Schengen pattern: Spain is in the Schengen Area; many passports get 90 days visa-free within 180 days, but rules depend on your nationality—check official sources.
- Check your visa: Do not assume: verify your passport’s visa/entry requirements on the destination’s immigration site or the IATA Travel Centre before booking.
- Passport validity: Rule of thumb: have at least 6 months passport validity beyond your planned return date—some carriers or countries enforce this strictly.
- Carry ID: Carry your passport when out and about; EU IDs valid for EU/Schengen citizens. Keep a photocopy or photo of passport separately.
Health & safety
- Vaccinations: No country-wide special vaccines routinely required; check health advisories for updates and any outbreak notices before travel.
- COVID & entry: Entry-related COVID or health rules can change; verify current requirements with official consular/health sites close to travel.
- Tap water: Tap water in Seville is generally safe to drink in the city; if you prefer, bottled water is widely available.
- Travel insurance: Carry travel medical insurance that covers EU care and emergency repatriation; bring prescription meds in original packaging with script.
Money & tipping
- Currency code: Currency: Euro (EUR).
- Cards vs cash: Cards widely accepted in shops and restaurants; carry small euro notes/coins for markets, some tapas bars, and buses.
- Tipping norm: Tipping is discretionary: small change or 5–10% in restaurants for good service; round up fares or leave small tip for bartenders.
- ATMs: ATMs widely available; check your bank’s fees for foreign withdrawals and notify them of travel plans to avoid blocks.
Connectivity & power
- Plug & voltage: Plugs: Type C and F. Voltage: 230 V, 50 Hz. Bring appropriate adapter and check device voltage compatibility.
- Mobile & SIM: Local prepaid SIMs and eSIMs available; compare short-term data plans on arrival or buy at the airport/shops.
- Wi‑Fi: Free Wi‑Fi common in hotels, cafés and many public areas, but quality varies—use a VPN for secure browsing on public networks.
Local norms & etiquette
- Dress: Seville is conservative in religious sites—cover shoulders/knees for church visits. In city social life is casual to smart-casual.
- Dining hours: Dining and social hours are later than some countries: lunch often 14:00–16:00, dinner commonly after 20:30, especially in summer.
- Personal space: Spanish people are generally warm and expressive; handshakes or light cheek kisses are common in social settings—mirror locals.
Climate & packing
- Best months: Best times: spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov) for mild weather and festivals. Peak summer (Jul–Aug) is very hot.
- What to pack: Pack light layers, sun protection, a hat, comfortable walking shoes, and a light jacket for cool evenings in spring/autumn.
- Heat tips: If traveling in summer, plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning or evening, stay hydrated and avoid midday heat.
Language & phrases
- Official language: Spanish (Castilian) is the official language; Andalusian Spanish is the local variety.
- Useful phrases: Hola (Hello); Gracias (Thank you); ¿Dónde está el centro/la catedral? (Where is the center/the cathedral?); Una cerveza, por favor (A beer, please).
- English use: English is common in tourist areas and hospitality, but learning basic Spanish phrases is appreciated and useful off the beaten path.
Airport & getting around
- Main airport: Seville Airport (SVQ, San Pablo) is the main airport serving the city.
- To city centre: Options: official airport bus (connects to central stops), taxis and ride-hail services; journey to center typically ~20–30 minutes depending on traffic.
- Public transport: Seville has good bus and tram networks and an expanding metro. Buy single tickets or reloadable cards at kiosks and machines.
- Biking & walking: City center is compact and walkable; public bike-share and cycling lanes make short trips convenient—wear comfy shoes for cobbled streets.
General guidance, not legal advice. Entry and health rules depend on your passport and change often. Verify with official sources before you fly.
