Know before you go 🧳
The practical stuff for Mexico City, Mexico. Check these before you book and pack.
Entry & Documents
- Visa basics: Mexico is visa-free or e-visa for many passports, but others need a visa in advance. Rules vary by nationality—always confirm for your passport before flying.
- Where to verify: Check current entry rules on Mexico’s official immigration site and/or the IATA Travel Centre. Do this before booking, as policies change.
- Passport validity: Aim for a passport valid at least 6 months beyond your arrival/return date; some airlines follow this rule even if the country doesn’t.
- Onward ticket & stay form: You may be asked for proof of onward travel, accommodation, and reason for visit at immigration. Keep confirmations handy (printed or offline).
- Arrival card & stamps: Check the number of days you’re granted on entry and keep any entry slip or stamp details; you may need them when leaving.
Health & Safety
- Vaccines check: Review routine vaccines and any recommended shots for Mexico with a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure; requirements can change.
- Altitude & air: Mexico City is ~2,250 m (7,400 ft). Expect shortness of breath and fatigue at first. Take it easy, hydrate, limit heavy exercise and alcohol on day 1–2.
- Food & water: Tap water is generally not considered safe to drink. Use bottled/filtered water, avoid ice if unsure, and favor busy, popular food spots.
- Sun & pollution: UV and smog can both be strong. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and any respiratory meds if you have asthma or sensitivities.
- Health access: Buy travel insurance that covers ER care and evacuation. Know your insurer’s 24/7 number before you go.
Money & Tipping
- Currency: Currency is the Mexican peso (MXN). Cards are widely accepted, but carry cash for street food, markets, and small shops.
- ATMs & exchange: Use ATMs at banks or inside malls for better security. Avoid airport and hotel exchange booths unless necessary due to poorer rates.
- Tipping norms: Restaurants: ~10–15% if not included. Small tips for bartenders, hotel staff, and guides are customary; round up for taxis.
- Paying securely: Keep a backup card and some emergency cash separate. Notify your bank of travel to avoid blocks and enable card controls/alerts.
- Small bills: Carry smaller notes and coins; many small vendors and taxis can’t change large bills easily.
Phones & Connectivity
- SIM & eSIM: Local prepaid SIMs/eSIMs (Telcel, AT&T, Movistar) are easy to buy at the airport or malls. Check that your phone is unlocked first.
- Roaming: Some North American/European plans include Mexico; others charge high roaming fees. Confirm data, call, and hotspot rates in advance.
- Wi‑Fi access: Wi‑Fi is common in hotels, cafés, and many public areas, but speeds vary. Download offline maps and key apps before arrival.
- Ride & safety apps: Install ride apps (e.g., Uber, Didi, Cabify) and keep accommodation pinned in maps for easier navigation and safer rides.
- Power & charging: Power is 127V, 60Hz with Type A/B plugs (US-style). Bring an adapter if your plugs differ; many devices accept 100–240V, check your chargers.
Safety & Etiquette
- Emergency number: The general emergency number is 911 for police, ambulance, and fire.
- Street safety: Use registered/ride-app taxis, especially at night. Keep phones and valuables discreet and avoid very empty streets after dark.
- Cash & ATMs: Use ATMs in well-lit, busy locations. Shield your PIN and avoid accepting unsolicited help at machines.
- Social norms: Politeness matters. Greet with “buenos días/tardes/noches” before asking for help. Being loud in residential areas late at night is frowned on.
- Religious sites: Dress modestly and speak quietly in churches and shrines; ask before taking photos during services.
Weather & Packing
- Best time to go: Generally pleasant year-round. Drier months Nov–Apr are popular; Jun–Sep is rainier, usually with afternoon/evening showers.
- Daily swings: High altitude means warm days and cool nights. Pack layers: light clothes for daytime plus a sweater or light jacket for evenings.
- Rain gear: In rainy months, bring a compact umbrella or light rain jacket and quick-drying shoes or sandals.
- Sun protection: Even when cool, UV is strong. Pack sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses; consider SPF lip balm.
- Air quality: On smoggier days sensitive travelers may prefer a light mask. Check local air-quality apps if you have respiratory issues.
Language Basics
- Official language: Spanish is the main language. English is spoken in many tourist areas but less so in local markets and small shops.
- Hello/Goodbye: “Hola” = Hello; “Buenos días/tardes/noches” = Good morning/afternoon/evening; “Adiós” = Goodbye.
- Polite phrases: Useful: “Por favor” (please), “Gracias” (thank you), “Lo siento” (I’m sorry), “Disculpe” (excuse me).
- Getting help: “¿Habla inglés?” (Do you speak English?), “No hablo español muy bien” (I don’t speak Spanish very well).
- Key travel phrase: “¿Cuánto cuesta?” (How much is it?), “¿Dónde está el metro/parada de autobús?” (Where is the metro/bus stop?).
Airport & Getting Around
- Main airport: Mexico City International Airport (MEX) is the main gateway, close to the city. Allow extra time for traffic and security queues.
- To the center: From MEX, use authorized airport taxis, ride apps, or Metrobus Line 4. Avoid random touts; buy taxi tickets from official booths.
- Public transit: Metro and Metrobus are cheap and fast but crowded at rush hour. Keep valuables secure and avoid very late-night trips when possible.
- Ride apps: Uber and similar apps are widely used; check pick-up points at the airport. Verify plate and driver before getting in.
- Getting around areas: Central areas like Centro, Roma, Condesa, and Polanco are walkable. Sidewalks can be uneven—wear comfortable shoes.
General guidance, not legal advice. Entry and health rules depend on your passport and change often. Verify with official sources before you fly.
