Know before you go 🧳
The practical stuff for Antalya, Türkiye. Check these before you book and pack.
Entry & documents
- Visa patterns: Türkiye offers e‑Visas or visa‑free entry for many nationalities, but rules vary by passport. Always verify requirements for your passport on the destination's immigration site or IATA Travel Centre.
- Passport validity: Rule of thumb: many countries ask for at least 6 months' passport validity beyond your date of arrival or return. Confirm the exact requirement before travel.
- Local emergency number: Emergency services: 112 (medical/fire/police). Save it in your phone and local contacts.
- Travel insurance: Carry travel insurance covering medical evacuation and COVID-19-related costs; some providers or airlines may request proof.
Health & vaccines
- Routine vaccines: Be up to date on routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus, etc.). Check with your healthcare provider for personal recommendations.
- Entry health checks: Health entry requirements can change (e.g., COVID rules). Check the Turkish Ministry of Health or your embassy for current rules before departure.
- Tap water note: Tap water in Antalya is generally treated but many travelers prefer bottled water for drinking. Decide based on local advice and personal tolerance.
- Medications: Bring prescriptions in original packaging and a copy of the prescription. Check legality of any controlled medicines with Turkish authorities.
Money & tipping
- Currency: Local currency code: TRY (Turkish lira). Carry some cash for small purchases, markets, and places that don’t take cards.
- Cards & ATMs: Credit/debit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas. ATMs are common in Antalya; notify your bank of travel to avoid blocks.
- Tipping norm: Tipping is customary: small tips in cafes/restaurants (5–10%), rounding up taxi fares, and modest tips for hotel staff and guides.
- Currency check: Avoid airport exchanges' poor rates when possible; compare ATM withdrawal fees and card conversion rates before you go.
Connectivity & power
- SIM & eSIM: Local prepaid SIMs and eSIMs are available at the airport and city shops; you’ll need passport ID for registration.
- Roaming: Check roaming plans with your carrier—data can be expensive. Buying a local data package is often cheaper for longer stays.
- Plugs & voltage: Plugs: Type C and F. Voltage: 220 V, 50 Hz. Bring a plug adapter; a voltage converter is only needed for non‑compatible devices.
- Wi‑Fi: Wi‑Fi is common in hotels, cafes and restaurants in tourist areas, though speeds can vary outside the city center.
Local customs & safety
- Dress & behavior: Antalya is touristy and relatively liberal, but modest dress is appreciated at religious sites. Respect local customs, especially in conservative neighborhoods.
- Haggling: Haggling is common in markets and bazaars; do so politely. Fixed‑price stores and most restaurants expect no bargaining.
- Personal safety: Antalya is generally safe for tourists. Use normal precautions: watch belongings in crowded places and avoid poorly lit areas at night.
Climate & packing
- Best months: Best time to visit: late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) for warm weather with fewer crowds. Peak summer (July–Aug) is hot and busy.
- What to pack: Bring lightweight clothes, sun protection, a hat, comfortable walking shoes, a light layer for evenings and swimwear if visiting beaches.
- Rain & seasonality: Winters are mild and wetter; if traveling off‑season, pack a waterproof layer and check local forecasts for stormy Mediterranean weather.
Language & key phrases
- Official language: Official language: Turkish. English is common in tourist areas, hotels and restaurants but less so in local neighborhoods.
- Useful phrases: Hello: 'Merhaba'. Thank you: 'Teşekkür ederim' (tesh-ek-kur). Please/Excuse me: 'Lütfen' / 'Affedersiniz'. Learning these goes a long way.
- Translation apps: Download an offline phrasebook or translation app before you go; mobile reception is usually sufficient for online lookups in town.
Airport & getting around
- Main airport: Main airport: Antalya Airport (AYT). It serves international and domestic flights and is the main gateway to the region.
- Airport to city: Antalya city center is about 13–20 km from AYT. Options: shuttle buses (Havaş), local public bus routes, taxis, and car rentals. Travel time ~20–40 minutes depending on traffic.
- Local transport: Public buses, trams and dolmuş (shared minibuses) cover the city and nearby beaches. Taxis are plentiful but confirm or request the meter.
- Driving: If renting a car, carry an IDP if required by your rental company, understand local driving rules, and watch for scooters and pedestrians in busy areas.
General guidance, not legal advice. Entry and health rules depend on your passport and change often. Verify with official sources before you fly.
