Know before you go 🧳
The practical stuff for Chiang Mai, Thailand. Check these before you book and pack.
Entry & ID
- Passport validity: Rule of thumb: many countries recommend at least 6 months validity beyond your planned departure from Thailand. Check your airline and official sources before travel.
- Visa overview: Many nationalities get a visa exemption or visa on arrival for short stays; others need a pre-arranged visa. Rules vary by passport—verify on Thailand's immigration site or the IATA Travel Centre.
- Carry ID: Carry a printed copy of your passport page and arrival card while out; hotels may ask to see your passport on check-in.
Health & Safety
- Vaccinations to check: Ensure routine vaccines are up-to-date. Visit a travel clinic for country-specific advice and any recommended boosters well before travel.
- Mosquito-borne illness: Dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses occur year-round. Use insect repellent, wear long sleeves at dawn/dusk, and use mosquito nets or AC where possible.
- Tap-water safety: Tap water in Chiang Mai is not reliably safe to drink for visitors. Use bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing teeth.
- Medical care: Chiang Mai has good private hospitals and clinics for routine and emergency care. Carry travel insurance with medical evacuation if needed.
Money & Costs
- Currency code: Thailand currency: Thai baht (THB). ATMs are widely available; inform your bank of travel to avoid card blocks.
- Tipping norm: Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Round up taxi/market bills, leave small tips at cafés/restaurants, and 20–50 THB for hotel staff is common.
- Cash vs cards: Cash is preferred for markets, street food and small shops. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, larger restaurants and malls.
Connectivity & Power
- Emergency numbers: Emergency: 191 for police, 1669 for medical emergencies/ambulance. Save numbers and your country's embassy/consulate contacts.
- Plug & voltage: Plugs: types A, B, C and O; voltage 220 V, 50 Hz. Bring a universal adapter and check device voltage compatibility.
- SIM & internet: Local prepaid SIMs with data are inexpensive and available at airport kiosks and shops. Wi‑Fi is common in hotels, cafés and malls.
Local Customs & Etiquette
- Temple manners: Dress modestly for temples: cover shoulders and knees. Remove shoes before entering prayer areas and avoid loud behavior.
- Royal respect: Showing respect for the Thai royal family is important. Avoid critical comments and be mindful of images of the monarchy in public.
- Head & feet etiquette: Do not touch people's heads and avoid pointing feet at people or religious objects; point with your whole hand or foot flat on the ground.
Climate & What to Pack
- Best months: Best time: November to February for cooler, drier weather. Hot season: March–May; rainy season: June–October with frequent afternoon showers.
- What to pack: Pack light breathable clothing, a lightweight rain jacket for wet season, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), comfortable shoes for walking and temple-appropriate attire.
- Air quality note: In late winter (Feb–Apr) northern Thailand can have poor air quality from agricultural burning. Check AQI forecasts if you have respiratory issues.
Language & Useful Phrases
- Official language: Thai is the official language. English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, hotels and restaurants.
- Greetings: Useful: 'Sawasdee' (hello), 'Khop khun' (thank you). Add 'khrap/ka' at the end for politeness (male/female).
- Basic help phrases: Useful: 'Tao rai?' (how much?), 'Hong nam yoo tee nai?' (where is the bathroom?). Carry addresses written in Thai for taxi drivers.
Airport & Getting Around
- Main airport: Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) serves domestic and international flights; it's about 3–5 km from the Old City.
- Airport to city: Options: metered taxis, airport shuttle vans, Grab rideshare or local tuk-tuks. Confirm fares or use the official taxi queue for metered trips.
- Getting around: In-city transport: Grab app, metered taxis, red songthaews (shared pickup trucks), tuk-tuks, rented scooters or bicycles. Negotiate fares for non-metered trips.
General guidance, not legal advice. Entry and health rules depend on your passport and change often. Verify with official sources before you fly.
