Know before you go 🧳
The practical stuff for Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Check these before you book and pack.
Entry & documents
- Passport validity: Rule of thumb: many countries ask for 6+ months validity beyond your trip. The UK often requires your passport to be valid for the duration of stay but rules vary by nationality—check official sources for your passport.
- Visa overview: Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Citizens of many countries can visit the UK short-term visa-free; others must apply in advance. Verify your specific requirement on the UK government site or IATA Travel Centre.
- Check before travel: Always confirm entry, allowed stay length, and any electronic travel authorisation for your passport on an official government immigration site before booking.
- Local emergency number: In an emergency call 999 or 112 for police, fire or ambulance.
Health & safety
- Vaccinations: No specific routine vaccines are universally required for visitors; ensure routine vaccinations are up to date and check health advisories for changes before travel.
- COVID & recent rules: Requirements and recommendations (testing, isolation) can change. Check government health advisories and airline rules shortly before departure.
- Travel insurance: Carry travel insurance that covers medical care and evacuation. NHS care is not free for most short-term visitors.
- Pharmacies: Pharmacies (chemists) are widely available in the city; carry any prescription medicines in original packaging and a copy of the prescription.
Money & payments
- Currency code: Currency: British pound (GBP, £).
- Card acceptance: Contactless and chip-and-PIN cards are widely accepted; carry a backup card in case of issues. Notify your bank of travel dates to avoid blocks.
- Cash & ATMs: ATMs are common; keep some cash for small purchases or markets. Check your bank's foreign ATM/transaction fees.
- Tipping norm: Tipping: around 10–15% in restaurants if service isn't included; round up taxis and leave small change or 10% in cafés/pubs if pleased with service.
Connectivity & power
- Plug & voltage: Plugs: Type G (three rectangular pins). Voltage: 230V, 50Hz. Bring a suitable adapter and check device compatibility.
- Mobile data & SIMs: Major UK providers include EE, Vodafone and O2. Buy a local pay-as-you-go SIM at the airport or shops for cheaper data if needed.
- Roaming & eSIM: Roaming costs depend on your provider and home country. eSIM and short-term roaming plans are widely available—compare before you travel.
- Wi‑Fi: Free Wi‑Fi is common in hotels, cafés and many public areas but avoid sensitive transactions on public networks without a VPN.
Local manners & tips
- Queuing & politeness: Respect queues and personal space. Politeness and saying 'please'/'thank you' are expected in shops and transit.
- Pubs etiquette: In many pubs order and pay at the bar; table service varies. Buying rounds for a group is common but optional—don’t feel pressured.
- Dress & behavior: Dress is generally casual but tidy. Avoid loud behaviour on public transport; be mindful around memorials and historic sites.
- Photography: Photography of public landmarks is fine; be respectful and ask before photographing people, especially in residential or religious areas.
Weather & packing
- Best months: Best months: May–September for milder weather and longer daylight. Shoulder seasons offer fewer crowds but more variable weather.
- Expect variability: Weather is changeable—sun, wind and rain can occur in a single day. Plan for layers and waterproof outerwear.
- What to pack: Pack a waterproof jacket, warm layers, comfortable walking shoes with good grip for cobbles and hills, and a compact umbrella.
- Daylight: Long daylight in summer, short days in winter—plan sightseeing accordingly, especially in winter months.
Language & useful phrases
- Official language: Primary language: English. Scots and Scottish Gaelic are also present regionally; most services operate in English.
- Hello: Hello — 'Hello' or informally 'Hi'.
- Please & thanks: Please — 'Please'. Thank you — 'Thank you' or 'Cheers' in casual contexts.
- Asking for help: Excuse me, can you help me? — 'Excuse me, can you help me?' (useful for directions or assistance).
Airport & getting around
- Main airport: Edinburgh Airport (EDI) is the main airport serving the city.
- Airport to city: Options to city centre: Tram service to Princes Street, Airlink 100 express buses, and taxis. Choose by budget and luggage—trams and buses run frequently.
- Local transport: City is compact—walkable in central areas. Buses, trams and local trains cover suburbs; buy tickets via apps, machines or contactless.
- Intercity travel: Trains and coaches connect Edinburgh to other UK cities; book in advance for best fares and check schedules for holidays.
General guidance, not legal advice. Entry and health rules depend on your passport and change often. Verify with official sources before you fly.
