Know before you go 🧳
The practical stuff for New York City, United States. Check these before you book and pack.
Entry & passport
- Passport validity: Rule of thumb: many countries require passports valid for 6+ months beyond your arrival or return. Verify the requirement that applies to your passport before travel.
- Visa patterns: Visitors from many countries use the US Visa Waiver Program (ESTA) or need a visa. Rules depend on your nationality—check the US embassy site or IATA Travel Centre for your passport.
- Customs & declaration: Declare cash over thresholds and restricted items at entry. Familiarize yourself with US customs rules on the CBP (Customs and Border Protection) website before flying.
Health & travel medical
- Vaccinations: No universal new-entry vaccine mandates, but routine vaccines are recommended. Check the CDC and your local health authority for current guidance and recommended shots.
- COVID & testing: COVID-19 rules and testing requirements can change. Verify up-to-date entry and airline requirements before departure (airlines sometimes have their own rules).
- Health insurance: US healthcare is expensive. Confirm your travel insurance covers medical evacuation, hospital care, and COVID treatment while in the US.
Money & tipping
- Currency: Local currency: US dollar (USD). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted; carry some cash for small vendors and tips.
- Tipping norm: Tipping expected: restaurants 15–20% pre-tax for table service; $1–2 per drink/bag for bar and porter service; 10–15% for taxis (or rounding up).
- ATMs & cards: ATMs widely available; notify your bank of travel. Many smaller places prefer cards or contactless—check for foreign transaction fees on your cards.
Phone & internet
- SIM & roaming: Major US carriers: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile. Prepaid eSIMs and physical SIMs are available at airports and shops—compare data packages for short trips.
- Wi‑Fi: Free Wi‑Fi is common in hotels, cafes and many public spots but secure it (use VPN) before accessing sensitive accounts on public networks.
- Plug & voltage: Power: Type A/B plugs, 120 V at 60 Hz. Bring a plug adapter and check device chargers for 120 V compatibility.
Local norms & safety
- General etiquette: Be direct but polite. Personal space is valued in lines and on transit. Service workers rely on tips—tipping is customary and expected.
- Safety: Exercise normal urban caution: watch belongings in crowded places, avoid poorly lit areas at night, and be aware of subway etiquette during peak hours.
- Emergency number: For police, fire or ambulance dial 911 anywhere in the United States.
When to go & what to pack
- Best months: Best times: spring (April–June) and fall (September–November) for mild weather and smaller crowds. Summers can be hot and humid; winters cold with possible snow.
- What to pack: Pack layers for variable weather, comfortable walking shoes, a light rain jacket or umbrella, and season-appropriate outerwear for winter or summer heat.
- Weather check: Storms, heat waves or winter storms can disrupt travel—check forecasts and local advisories in the days before and during your trip.
Language & useful phrases
- Official language: Primary language: English. Spanish commonly spoken in many neighborhoods and businesses.
- Useful phrases: "Hello/Hi" — "Hello"; "Please" — "Please"; "Thank you" — "Thank you". Simple English suffices for most transactions and directions.
- Translation apps: Use offline translation or phrasebook apps if you need Spanish or other languages—many vendors and signs are bilingual in tourist areas.
Airport to city center
- From JFK Airport: Options: AirTrain to Jamaica Station then subway (E/J/Z) or LIRR to Penn Station; taxis and ride‑shares available—allow 45–90 minutes depending on traffic.
- From Newark (EWR): Take AirTrain to Newark Liberty International Airport station, connect to NJ Transit or Amtrak to Penn Station; taxis and ride‑shares are alternatives.
- From LaGuardia (LGA): No rail link: buses and shuttles connect to subway or Long Island City; taxis and ride‑shares are fastest with variable traffic—allow extra time for peak hours.
General guidance, not legal advice. Entry and health rules depend on your passport and change often. Verify with official sources before you fly.
